“When the student is ready the teacher appears. When the student is truly ready the teacher disappears.”

Lao Tzu-

This quote is one that has guided me throughout my life. At life’s toughest times someone has appeared to help me make it through to the other side. I began my professional life as a high school teacher of French and English after graduating from Jacksonville State University with a B.A. in French and a B.S. in Secondary Education. While I was teaching I completed my M.A. in Education, Counseling and Guidance at UAB. After five years in education a teacher appeared who helped me realize that my calling was in Mental Health counseling. I enjoyed more than 25 years learning and counseling in a psychiatric clinic setting, working with both inpatients and outpatients. I later worked for 7 years as co-owner of a non-profit counseling center and 15 years as Director of EAP for an EAP/Managed Behavioral Health organization. I incorporate both teaching and counseling skills in working with my clients. My goal is to create an atmosphere of acceptance and safety to allow clients to understand themselves more fully and learn coping skills to enrich and enhance their lives. I utilize cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and client-centered therapies to assist clients in becoming who they are meant to be.
